Declarations page

Quick answer

The declarations page, often called the dec page, is usually the first page of your auto insurance policy. It summarizes the key details: the insurance company, who is insured, which vehicles are covered, your coverages with their limits and deductibles, the policy period and the premium.

How it works

Your policy is made up of the declarations page, the policy form and any endorsements. The policy form sets out the rules for every customer, while the declarations page shows how they apply to you. It typically lists:

  • the insurer's full legal name and the policy number,
  • the policy period,
  • the named insured and other listed drivers,
  • each covered vehicle,
  • each coverage, with its limits and deductible,
  • the premium, often broken down by coverage,
  • any lender or leasing company listed as loss payee.

Read the declarations page first whenever you buy or renew a policy. It is the quickest way to check that you have the coverage you meant to buy, and it is handy when comparing car insurance quotes, because it shows exactly which limits and deductibles to match.
