## Quick answer

A car is a total loss, or "totaled," when it is destroyed or when repairing it would cost too much compared with what it was worth before the damage. Instead of paying for repairs, the insurer pays the car's value.

## How it works

California's insurance department defines a total loss as damage so extensive that the property cannot be restored to its prior condition, or that repairing it would be cost prohibitive compared with its value before the loss. In practice:

- **The decision.** The Texas Department of Insurance says an insurer may total a car when the repair cost is close to the car's current value.
- **The payment.** The insurer pays the car's value minus depreciation, the price of a comparable used car of the same age, not a new one. Texas suggests gathering written quotes for similar cars from dealers if you think the offer is too low.
- **A loan.** If you owe more than the car is worth, the payment may not pay off the loan. Gap insurance is designed to cover that difference.
- **The car.** The insurer normally takes the damaged car. If you keep it, the insurer subtracts its salvage value from your payment.

Example: your car was worth $12,000 before a crash and repairs are estimated at $11,000. Because the repair cost is close to the car's value, the insurer may total it and pay $12,000 minus your deductible.
