## Quick answer

In car insurance, reinstatement can mean two things: an insurer restoring a policy that was canceled or set to end, or a state restoring a driver license or registration that was suspended, often because of an insurance problem.

## Reinstating a policy

If your policy was canceled, for example for a missed payment, or you received a nonrenewal notice, the Texas Department of Insurance suggests asking your agent or company whether they can reinstate it. Whether an insurer agrees, and on what conditions, depends on the company and your state's rules.

Before you accept, check the reinstatement date. If the policy is restored with a gap between the cancellation and the new effective date, your car had no coverage during those days, which can count as a lapse. If the policy cannot be reinstated, start shopping right away so new coverage begins before the old policy ends.

## Reinstating driving privileges

States can suspend a license or registration for driving uninsured, for lapses or for failing to keep a required filing. Getting privileges back usually involves meeting the state's conditions and paying a fee. Oregon's DMV, for example, requires a reinstatement fee if it suspends your driving privileges for failing to file an SR-22, and the SR-22 must then be kept on file until the requirement ends.
