## Quick answer

A named driver exclusion is an agreement, added to your policy by endorsement, that your insurance will not cover accidents when one specific person drives. Households sometimes use it so that a high-risk member's record does not drive up the premium for everyone else.

## How it works

Most policies cover family members and people who drive your car with your permission. An exclusion carves one identified person out of that coverage. Florida's statute shows the kind of rules a state can set:

- The excluded person must be named on the declarations page or in an endorsement, and the named insured must agree in writing.
- The policy can then exclude liability coverage for crashes that person causes while driving, plus personal injury protection and uninsured motorist benefits for that person's own injuries.
- An insurer may not exclude someone solely because of race, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, pregnancy or marital status, and the exclusion does not apply when the person is hurt while not driving.
- The excluded driver must still show their own proof of financial responsibility.

The key risk: if the excluded person drives your car anyway and causes a crash, your policy may pay nothing, and the costs can fall on you and that driver. Rules differ by state, so ask your insurer or state insurance department whether exclusions are allowed and how they work.
