## Quick answer

A multi-policy discount is a price reduction an insurer gives when you buy more than one type of policy from it, most often auto plus homeowners or renters insurance. It is also called a bundling discount.

## How it works

State regulators list it among the common discounts. The Texas Department of Insurance includes having "other policies with the same insurance company," and the NAIC suggests asking about an auto/home package. Both also mention a related discount for insuring more than one vehicle, often called a multi-car discount.

Each company decides which discounts to offer and how large they are, and the NAIC notes that not every discount is available in every state. So a bundle is not automatically the cheapest choice. Before you combine policies:

- Compare the bundled price with the best separate price for each policy.
- Make sure both quotes use the same coverage limits and deductibles.
- Ask whether the discount applies to every policy in the bundle or only to one of them.
- Check what happens to the discount if you later move one policy to another company.

Example: if bundling cuts your auto premium by $100 but the same insurer charges $150 more for home coverage than a competitor, the bundle costs you $50 more overall.
