## Quick answer

An FR-44 is a certificate your insurance company files with the state to prove you carry auto liability insurance at higher-than-normal limits. Only Florida and Virginia use it, mainly after a DUI conviction. It is not a separate type of insurance but proof attached to your policy.

## How it works

An FR-44 works much like an SR-22, but the required limits are higher:

- **Florida:** after a DUI conviction, you must carry at least $100,000 per person and $300,000 per crash for bodily injury, plus $50,000 for property damage, for at least 3 years.
- **Virginia:** FR-44 limits are double the SR-22 limits: $100,000 per person, $200,000 per accident and $50,000 for property damage. It applies after convictions such as DUI and maiming while under the influence.

Your insurer, not you, files the certificate with the state. Keep the policy in force for the whole required period, because letting it lapse can put your license at risk. If you move out of state while the requirement applies, ask the state that required the filing how to keep it in place.
