## Quick answer

A CLUE report (Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange) is a claims history report produced by LexisNexis, a consumer reporting agency. Insurers check it to see your past auto and property claims when deciding whether to insure you and what to charge.

## How it works

A CLUE Auto report covers up to 7 years of personal auto claims. An entry can show your name, date of birth, policy number, the date and type of loss, the amount the insurer paid and details of the vehicle. Insurers report their claims to the exchange, so a new company can see claims you filed with a previous one.

Because LexisNexis is a consumer reporting agency, the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act entitles you to a free copy of your report, which you can request from LexisNexis online or by phone. If something is wrong, you can dispute it. LexisNexis checks the item with the insurer that reported it and tells you the result, and you can add a short statement explaining an entry.

Checking your report before you shop for car insurance quotes helps you spot errors, such as a claim that is not yours, that could push your price up.
